Every IT Professional Needs to Know

I believe it was my old manager who told me how I need to know my worth as an IT professional. It helps when you’re trying to negotiate your salary or if you want to move on to greener pastures. Most of you might feel the same so I’m sharing this with you.

Global Knowledge, a company specializing in IT and business training, conducted a survey on salary and job satisfaction on IT jobs. I am very interested to know this because I want to know how much I should expect if I decide to work overseas. From the survey, which can be seen here, the Executive Management is at the top of the list of IT people that are making the most money (like this is a surprise), with Project Management positions and Senior IT management being second. A Web/Internet developer (that’s me!) can earn an average of $63K a year, which isn’t very far from the rate that my friend gave me when she got offered a job last month. The report also discussed the key factors on why employers retain their people and why employees choose to stay. It also showed how many IT professionals are not nearly as satisfied with their salary increase as opposed to their starting salaries when they first joined the company. For IT professionals, continuous learning and certifications are important to prove your expertise. Studies show that those employees are concerned about keeping their jobs that they work and train harder to increase their credibility.

Check out the Global Knowledge website for more info about this survey. And if you’re looking to improve your skills or receive certification for your expertise, they offer various programs from MCSE training to PMP Certifications to Red Hat Certified Engineer and more. I know I would if only I have time and money. Perhaps next year I could get lucky that my company will cover the expenses. Of course, that would act like some sort of a bond that I won’t be allowed to leave them for three of five years.
